Dr. Baba J Adamu, in a remark
about Nigerian Development in
education, he has these to say "The educational system in
Nigeria and in many African countries, was urban conscious. It does
not prepare the young Nigerians for a return to the land. Rather it
alienate him or her from the land. Long term planning and going back
to affordable farming was considered demeaning while furtive efforts
were made on short term uncalculated planning and at pursuing
current western standards of technology without
adequate infrastructure to support them. I
say we have to change our orientation. We
recommend an appropriate technology that will take into cognizance
and put into maximum use of the indigenous
genius of the people and their local resources. Those are the only
relevant technology that should be employed in all aspect of
development. It is a fundamental law of economics that one should
employ the resources that are scarce and maximize the use of
resources that are plentiful. For Nigeria, that is labor-intensive,
capital-saving ventures and methods, because cheap labor is
available in abundance. Nigeria is a huge domestic market itself and
has tradition of loving freedom. And it is a democratic tradition.
The warmth of that tradition kept us united and will make us clap
with pride. With the implementation of such
methods and from prudent
fiscal policies and future vision,
we will see no more poor
planning, misplaced priorities, government, organizations and
individual irresponsibility, incessant military coups, violent
religious skirmishes, tribal conflicts and any social upheaval.
In such a conflict and economic
confusions, precious people-lives and times are lost, scarce natural
resources destroyed, farms and industry abandoned and potential
investors scared away. The production of food, technology
advancements and other economic ventures require peace and
stability. That is why the I call on any
government to pursue workable
policies with vigor, guarantees peace and stability which are vital
for economic development and growth. We have
at hand an elaboration of basic affordable technologies.
Standardized housing design with gyps and a system of planning and
prophylactic of maintenance services of that type of building
appropriate to Nigerian cultural socio-economic needs. And a solar
pumping systems, floating pumps for pumping in lakes, rivers, etc.
for irrigation applications and boreholes submersible pumps. And
other small scale high efficiency technology variant optional
systems which are cost-effective, easy to apply and to improve.
These are European solutions but modeled and applied to
African condition. The very fact that Nigeria and Africa
entered the twentieth century with the hoe and cutlass, and at the
end of the century have not improved on these 'primitive' tools, is
an index of complete neglect, lack of stability, organizational
problems and as a whole an economic disaster. If
we can reverse this trend then surely we
have a responsibility to act, and act now, thank you"
